Most of the documentary films to record the People’s Uprising on May 18th were filmed by a German reporter Juergen Hinzpeter. The wretched spectacles on May 18th by him were broadcasted on the German first broadcasting company, ARD on May 22nd 1980, and subsequently a special show titled ‘Korea, to Face the Crossroads’ was on air. In Korea, the misery of May 18thwas not known until the illegal underground VHSs of the show were released in 1986. The German broadcasting reported it in 1980 as follows; "the citizens are on the demonstrators’ side, and all the gas stations offer free gas." And at the same time a statement of the reporters of Jeonnam Maeil Newspaper said, "We saw the people being pulled to be killed with the naked eye. But we couldn’t write a word on the newspaper. So we are too ashamed to write."
