한국영화의 새로운 도전
한국영화의 가능성을 넓혀 가는 독립영화를 지원하고 현주소를 조망하는 장으로서 서울독립영화제는 ‘한국영화의 새로운 도전’을 메인슬로건으로 선정했습니다. 1999년 영화진흥위원회와 (사)한국독립영화협회가 영화제의 변화 의지를 담은 초기 슬로건으로서 그 목표는 지금도 유효합니다. 독립영화는 영화 운동의 도도한 물결을 넘고 다양한 실천과 미학적 실험을 거쳐 영화의 미래를 확장하고 있습니다. 서울독립영화제와 함께 한국영화의 새로운 도전은 오늘도 계속됩니다.

어딘가에 얼마만큼 머무를 수 있을까?
좋아하는 마음은 언제까지 이어질 수 있을까?
답이 정해지지 않은 고민을 하면서도 발걸음을 내딛고 더 멀리를 향하는 눈동자를 감지 않는 일이 우리가 매번 내놓는 답안지입니다.
누구도 채점해 줄 수 없는 움직임의 미덕들, 누구나 써 내려갈 수 있는 작고 깊은 역사들이 우리의 지반입니다.
비바람에 두터워진 땅 아래, 몸과 마음의 깊은 곳에 묻어 있는 동료와 동무들의 흔적들을 찾아 나서기로 합니다.
어디에 묻혀 있을지는 영화라는 공통의 더듬이에 맡겨도 되겠지요.
발견의 순간들이 세월의 겹겹을 만나 우리 곁에 있다는 정보를 전합니다.

심볼 & 컨셉
독립영화 특유의 에너지와 차별화된 축제의 성격을 불규칙한 이미지로 표현했다.
필름 심볼은 영화의 매체적 특성을 직관적으로 보여주고, 한 해의 독립영화를 아우르고 결산하는 영화제의 역할과 위상은 마침표를 통해 집약했다.

A New Challenge for Korean Cinema
As a place that supports the independent films widening the possibilities of Korean cinema and that surveys where it stands today, the Seoul Independent Film Festival chose “A New Challenge for Korean Cinema” as its main slogan. Adopted in 1999 by the Korean Film Council and the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video to express the festival’s will to change, its aim still holds. Independent film has carried the current of the film movement forward and, through practice and aesthetic experiment, keeps expanding the future of cinema. Together with the festival, the new challenge for Korean cinema continues today.

How long can a loving heart keep going?
Taking the next step and keeping our eyes on what lies farther ahead, even while wrestling with questions that have no set answers: this is the answer sheet we hand in every time.
The virtues of movement that no one can grade, the small and deep histories that anyone can write: these are the ground we stand on.
Beneath the earth thickened by wind and rain, deep within body and heart, we set out to find the traces of the colleagues and companions buried there.
Where they lie, we can leave to cinema, the antenna we all share.
We bring word that moments of discovery, meeting the many layers of time, are right here beside us.
We look forward to everyone who will gladly join us on this adventure of excavation.

The irregular forms express the energy particular to independent film and the distinct character of the festival.
The film strip shows the medium at a glance, while the full stop sums up the festival’s role and standing as it gathers and
closes the year in independent film.
