Amid the era when publication was oppressed, there were those who dreamed of a city devoted to books. As borderland in search of a “new architecture” take part in this dream, Paju transforms from its past ruin as a military borderland into the sole ecological city of books in the entire universe. A story of the 30-year-old process of which this transformationㅡso-called the “Great Contract”ㅡtook place, and the prospective book and culture city in pursuit of a peaceful unification.

What is the ideal “city” in the modern world? Through Paju Book City, which is unprecedented in the world, we wanted to think about the meaning and future of the city we live in. Paju Book City was the first privately-led city to sprout 30 years ago. What kind of city is Paju Book City for us, where the dreams of publishers to make better books and the hopes of architects to make better cities meet? We tried to find out how the city was made possible by publishers and architects with the value of communality, not the logic of capital.
