SYNOPSIS
도시주변 산림이 CO2를 흡수하는 대신 되려 뿜어내
대기환경을 더 악화시켰다는 사실을 발견했다
이례적인 이상고온 때문에 나무들은 더위에
적응하기위해 생장 시스템을 바꾼 것이다
그 시점부터 자연의 먹이사슬은 역순환하기 시작한다
DIRECTING INTENTION
모든 생명 존재는 나름의 이유(소이연;所以然)를 가지고 있다.
그 이유의 근본은 단지 생의충동, 죽고 싶지 않다는 본성을 지구를 포함한 모든 생명체가 가지고 있다고 본다.
노자는 도덕경 5장에서
[天地 不仁(천지불인)하여 以萬物爲芻拘(이만물위추구)라 聖人 不仁(성인불인)하여 以百姓爲芻拘(이백성위추구)라
-- 천지와 성인은 仁하지 않아 만물과 백성을 짚으로 만든 강아지만큼도 여기지 않는다] 하였다.
자연은 선한존재거나 인격적 신에 의해 움직이는 것이 아닌 치열한 생존 그물 안에서
살아남기 위해 노력하는 존재들로 보게 된다.
이 필름은 변종된 생명체들이 파괴된 먹이피라미드를 역행함으로써 지속되는 자연파괴에 대한 경종을 울린다.

PROGRAM NOTE
이산화탄소를 흡수하는 대신 배출하는 산림. 자연에게 우리가 행한 악행을 되돌아본다면 이러한 변종현상이 그리 놀랍지는 않다. 인간조차 자연의 일부임을 망각하는 우리들의 오만한 역사는 나무를 밀고 산을 뚫고 갯벌을 메워버리고 그 자리에 시멘트를 덮어버리는 회색빛 역사가 아니던가. 하지만 이런 작은 변종은 우리가 메워버린 갯벌 크기의 몇 배가 되어 재앙으로 돌아온다. 소이연所以然, 모든 생명은 나름의 존재이유를 가질 진데 그 존재이유를 부정해버리니 자연의 생태계와 먹이사슬의 역순환도 가능한 것이다.
<소이연>은 현재의 원인(자연을 훼손시키는)으로 자연 질서가 무너져버린 미래를 그로데스크하게 보여주는 애니메이션이다. 감독의 집중력은 국수를 쌓아 만든 무늬를 한컷한컷 촬영한, 일명 국수애니메이션으로 불리는 <볼록이 이야기>에서 그러했듯이 <소이연>에서도 작품전반에 고스란히 묻어난다. 또한 감독의 창작열은 섬세한 캐릭터와 배경을 만들어내고 감독이 전하고자 한 메시지를 효과적으로 전달하고 있다. 이런 고집스럽고 뚝심 있는 감독의 새 작품을 4년 만에 만나 반갑다.

SYNOPSIS
It has been found that plants of downtown areas produced more carbon dioxide than they absorbed from the atmosphere and leaded air pollution to be deteriorated. Trees changed their growth pattern to stand the heat of hot weather because of unusual above-average temperatures. Now the natural food chain starts the counter-cycle.
DIRECTING INTENTION
All living things have their own reasons for being. The root of reason is that the living beings have instincts for survival and original nature not willing to die. The following phrase is contained in chapter 5 of Tao Te Ching, a work of Lao-tzu. "Heaven and earth do not act from (the impulse of) any wish to be benevolent; They deal with all thing as the dogs of grass are death with. The sages do not act form (any wish to be) benevolent; They deal with the people as the dogs of grass are dealt with" All living beings including the earth are regarded as existences trying to survive in the face of fierce competition, not being protected by any good being. This film should serve as a warning to continuous environmental destruction by showing the counter-cycle of transformed creature against natural food chain.
