SYNOPSIS

Numerous colonial places, including coastal cave and military bunkers on a lot of Oreums, as well as memories of uprising and massacres are everywhere on Jeju Island. This work is based on René Magritte's "La Condition humaine” (1935), which is a view of the outside of the cave superimposed on a canvas. The camera captures landscape of caves and bunkers in Jeju Island as having quote from Hollis Frampton’s the script of A Lecture, and asks media can capture the image of historic vestige on the landscape without any distortion or elimination.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Looking into the cave from outside is like looking inside of cameras, and when I go into the cave and observe outside of it, the landscape through the entrance is like a screen. I imagined people’s situations when they had to be hidden inside the caves and looked at the landscape in front of them in the tragic era Jeju Island. Looking outside of a cave seems like watching a screen in a theater. If the cave can be considered as the the black box of a camera, I thought that the scenery in front of the eyes would be different depending on which filter was placed at the entrance. The experimental filmmaker Hollis Frampton stated in A Lecture that the red filter placed in front of the projector gate allows us to see more of the blue and green, rather than see more of the red color. I thought that the story could meet the historical landscapes in Jeju.
