Gang Chang-sik realizes Yu Soo-ok has found a lover. Eventually, Yu Soo-ok decides to quit her job in order to enter a fake marriage so as to get a new visa. Upon hearing this, Gang Chang-sik suggests that they get married. Gang Chang-sik’s daughter, son and wife all raise objections. At the family meeting, they fail to reach an agreement and only end up drudging up old wounds.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Bedsores are injuries to skin and underlying tissue, caused by prolonged pressure resulting from staying in one position for too long. Usually unaware of the conditions we are in, we only look back on ourselves when we realize that our flesh is rotting. It is only then, that we try to escape from the situation.
< A Bedsore > features a retired civil servant in his 70s named Gang Chang-sik, his wife Na Gilsoon who’s been left paralyzed by a cerebral haemorrhage, her caretaker Yu Soo-ok, a Korean-Chinese woman living and working illegally in Korea, and other family members. Fixed by their social status and desire, thus, unable to move, they rot. The film explores the delicate psychology of the characters, as well as incidents related to various issues, such as old people, immigrant workers, marriage, and patriarchal traditions. As a result, the film seeks to reveal a cross section of society and offer a chance for us to confront our ontological concerns.
