SYNOPSIS
I once played the part of a man in black who washes windows in HONG Sang-soo's <On the Beach at Night Alone>. Yeong-kwon, who has devoted his life to progressive politics and I, a cinematographer, have been friends for 24 years. He has lost in all three elections so far. However, Yeong-kwon still dreams of changing the world with a hula-hoop and decides to run for district representative in his fourth election yet again. At the same time, I want to try and face the world in my own way: by cleaning windows whilst shooting a film. Can we make our politics “a big hit” and get our film “elected”?
DIRECTING INTENTION
As a tool to change the world, one chose politics, and the other chose film. The two friends each went in their own ways with their own tools, for over 20 years. Though the tool itself had not changed, the ways to hold onto and to use the tools, went through changes. What stayed unchanging til the very end, was the world. Despite the fact, the friend moves on. Even if there’s failure, one moves on to fail better. It is for this reason that the recording of the friend’s unrewarding challenges remain worthy of meaning. The film hopes to capture the time lapse of 24 years and the valuable failures within, through the distance that the camera creates.
