SYNOPSIS
"Could we keep on yo-yoing?" Dae-yeol, Dong-hun, Hyunwoong, Dong-geon, and Jong-gi have been yo-yoing since childhood. For them, in their late 20s, this question was more important than anything else. In the summer of 2011, the five finally decide to challenge themselves, to stand on the stage of their dreams, and to quit yo-yoing afterwards. With the exception of Jong-gi, the four participate in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Jong-gi, who didn’t have enough money, stayed in Korea and went on a TV audition program. After the dreamlike days, making the choice has become even more difficult. For the five, "Yo-yo" had a different meaning now, and the reality that they each face, was not easy.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Children born in the late 1980s were the first generation to be “allowed to” have hobbies in Korean society. The children were able to choose a hobby for their spare time, and even believed that if they were good, they could make a living out of it. However, 20 years later, they are confronted with an order to discard their hobbies to earn money, as they have become adults.
A few years ago, I met five people on the streets of a festival, yo-yoing. The “three-meter-diameter world”, made by a small toy connected to a string, seemed uncomparably valuable, and beautiful. In a world where “conditions for life”, were not met, unprovided, for each “phase of life”, people are forced to give up small portions of their dignity, for the sake of stability. I wondered how these five people were going to guard their small worlds, against this world.
