SYNOPSIS

One spring day, she hums on her back with a restless mind in Taepyeong-dong, then ends up spending a slow afternoon walking down the streets of her grandma’s neighborhood. Walking along the allies, she comes across Hanbit Central Church. Blinded by the light, she turns to her right to find the door with a lion face. Their eyes meet. The lion’s door met by chance, summons her childhood, like a secret door. Her story as of today, and respective stories of her grandma’s and her father’s are each told on each rooftop. What had they been trying to guard on this serene yet not so serene land? What were they guarding from? The guarding lion and the lion in search of something to guard, meet. I am Hanbit. I'm a lion.

DIRECTING INTENTION

66.1157 square meters (20peyong) of land, signifies the history of how the city of Seongnam was built, and how individuals were sacrificed under state violence and desire. Lives of the people who were forced to migrate to Seongnam at the time of no infrastructure, under “Migrate first and develop later” policy in the late 1960s of Seoul, still remain in Taepyeong-dong. The multiplex housing zone in Taepyeong-dong, reveals traces of lives of which personal lives could hardly have been respected. Hanbit has just turned 28 this year. She studies vocal music in college. Her grandmother makes her noodles with sesame seeds, and has raised five daughters and a son, Habit's father. Her father had to support the family by selling cars even though he wrote poetry. Habit who does not like rice with beans feels anxiety for her future. The story that covers the three generations, overlap the moments cherished in each one of their lives, with certain places in Taepyeng-dong, by means of image and corporal movement. The time of a school girl in Bundang, of which she hid from her friends that she lived in Taepyeong-dong, and the present time of Taepyeong-dong, will be encountered by the rooftops, and other lives on other rooftops will be imagined as well.
