SYNOPSIS

Kogure gets a job in a factory that produces paper clips by hand from wires. One day, Kogure finds a butterfly trapped in his room and sets it free. The next evening, he finds a woman who speaks a strange dialect inside his apartment. The next day, a man who appears to be the woman's father settles in the apartment as well, and the odd trio starts living together.

DIRECTING INTENTION

I wanted to do a story like a Japanese folktale such as "The Grateful Crane," and that was the starting point for this film. The end result didn't have much to do with "returning a favor" like the folktale, though. The dialect in the film is an original one, and the actors and I created it little by little based on the lines in the script written in the standard Japanese. We shot each scene after rehearsing it for several days. Kazutoshi Kato, who played the factory manager, Yukari Hara, who played Suzuko, Wani Kansai, who played Edo, and Toshiyuki Takahashi, who played Mikio, all appeared in my earlier work called [The Blue Monkey].
