Mr. Huh has always been a left-handed and pockmarked nomadic merchant. In his wild youth, he made love with a village girl on a moonlit night when buckwheat flowers bloomed. On the opening day of Bongpyung market, he goes to the pub with another travelling merchant Mr. Jo. They meet a young man called Dong-i there. The young man's banter with the pub's landlady annoys him. Mr. Huh slaps Dong-i and throws him out of the bar. That night, Mr. Huh, Mr. Jo, and Dong-i go for a walk along the mountainous buckwheat flowers road in the moonlight. Mr. Huh always talks about that mystical night with the village girl in a water mill in the moonlight of his youth. Dong-i talks about his mother and says that he doesn't know who his father is. He explains that he ran away from home because of his perverse stepfather’s bullying. The old man falls into the water while crossing the stream and the young chap carries him on his back. As Mr. Huh discovers that Dong-i's mother is from Bongpyung and he is also left-handed, he begins to have mixed feelings. They decide to go to Jaecheon together where Dong-i's mother is living.

I have no doubt any painter who sees the scenery of the buckwheat flowers blossom would like to draw a picture of the scene. I wanted to describe the nomadic merchant’s pitiful life passing through the buckwheat flower road with a donkey by myself. I wanted to explore the root of joys and sorrows of the trivial story. I think the story, which unfolds in the moonlit buckwheat fields of Bongpyung is simply poetic. I hope I have captured the ordinary people's rough language and the weakness of dream-like love in my film, and I hope to show the beautiful scenery through Korean language.

왼손잡이에 곰보인 장돌뱅이 허생원은 언제나 메밀꽃이 흐드러지게 필 무렵이면 봉평장을 찾는다. 혈기왕성했던 그 옛날 꿈같았던 하룻밤 인연을 여전히 잊지 못하는 건, 휘영청 밝은 달빛에 하얗게 빛나는 메밀꽃이 해마다 그를 맞으며 마법 같았던 그 밤을 떠오르게 하기 때문이리라. 이번에도 어김없이 메밀꽃 필 무렵의 봉평을 찾은 허생원은 하얀 메밀꽃처럼 예뻤던 그녀를 닮은 신참 장돌뱅이 동이와 동행하며 왠지 모를 기대에 가슴이 설렌다.<소중한 날의 꿈>의 안재훈, 한혜진 감독의 신작 <메밀꽃 필 무렵>은 오랫동안 사랑받아 온 이효석의 단편소설을 애니메이션으로 옮긴 작품이다. 원작의 유명세만큼 많은 이들에게 잘 알려진 이야기지만 두 감독은 전작에서도 익히 봐 왔던 탄탄하고 완성도 높은 작화와 섬세한 연출을 통해 익숙한 이야기를 애니메이션이라는 시청각적인 매체로 새롭게 그려 낸다. 밝은 달빛 아래 밤사이 쌓인 눈처럼 하얗게 빛나는 메밀꽃, ‘쏴, 쏴’ 파도 소리처럼 불어오는 바람에 이리저리 흔들리는 하얀 메밀꽃 사이를 허생원과 동이 일행이 나귀를 타고 걷는다. 이 장면은 원작에서도 가장 아름다운 광경이지만, 한 폭의 풍경화처럼 아름다운 이미지와 소리로 보고 듣는 메밀꽃밭의 풍경은 관객 역시 그들의 동행이 되어 함께 이야기를 나누며 걷는 것 같은 심상에 젖게 한다. 작품의 시작을 여는 시골 장의 정겨운 풍경과 장돌뱅이, 각다귀, 주막집 주모처럼 장터의 주인이었던 이들에 대한 생생한 묘사 역시 놓칠 수 없다. 아름다운 문학작품을 그저 애니메이션으로 재현한 것이 아닌, 한때는 일상의 모습이었지만 너무도 빠르게 사라져 버린 아련한 시절의 풍경들과 평범했지만 인간답고 그윽한 정으로 넘쳤던 우리 삶의 모습을 따스한 시선과 세밀한 작업으로 그려낸 작품이다.
