SYNOPSIS

This film is about the life confinement in prison of Kim Sun Myung who had been caught as a North Korean soldier during the Korean War. The ordeals and anguish of a simple man, who tries to keep his freedom of conscience by refusing to write the letter of conversion, are represented through the smooth editing process and the composed camera that seems to intently gaze at the subject. Delivering a deep impression rarely found in mainstream films, director Hong Ki Seon’s second feature film in 10 years.

장산곶매, 서울영상집단 등에서 활동한 80년대 영화운동의 맹장.

80년대 말 장산곶매에서 5.18 민주화운동을 그린 [오 꿈의 나라]를 제작한 그는 1992년 현대판 노예선인 멍텅구리배에 억류된 청년을 다룬 [가슴에 돋는 칼로 슬픔을 자르고]로 상업영화 감독으로 데뷔했다. 세련된 기교는 없지만 진심어린 리얼리즘 드라마라는 평을 받았던 이 데뷔작은 1993년 영평상 각본상, 신인감독상을 수상했다.
