SYNOPSIS
태평양전쟁 당시 팔라우로 강제 징용되었던 외할아버지의 기억을 기록하던 손녀의 시선으로 바라본 이야기이다. 일제강점기 일본군이 남긴 군사시설과 여순사건의 흔적이 남아 있는 공간들을 통해, 한 사람의 삶 속에 겹쳐진 두 시대의 비극과 오늘까지 이어져 온 시간의 흔적들을 따라간다.
DIRECTING INTENTION
팔라우 강제 징용과 여순사건이라는 서로 다른 시대의 비극이, 한 사람의 삶과 하나의 도시 안에서 어떻게 이어져 있었는지를 기록한 다큐멘터리이다. 외할아버지의 인터뷰와 현재의 여수 풍경을 교차시키며, 시간이 흐르며 변해 버린 도시의 모습 속에서도 여전히 남아 있는 장소와 기억의 흔적들을 바라보고자 했다. 역사를 설명하거나 해석하기보다, 한 사람이 지나온 시간과 그가 살아낸 공간들을 따라가며 오늘까지 이어져 온 기억의 무게를 담아내고자 했다.

SYNOPSIS
The film is told through the eyes of a granddaughter who recorded the memories of her grandfather, who was forcibly mobilized to Palau during the Pacific War. Through the military facilities left behind by the Japanese forces during the colonial period and the sites that still bear traces of Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 (1948), the film follows the remnants of two tragedies that intersected in one man’s life and continue to linger in the present.
DIRECTING INTENTION
The film documents how two tragedies from different periods—the forced mobilization to Palau and Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 (1948)—became intertwined within one man’s life and one city. By interweaving the grandfather’s interview with present-day images of Yeosu, the film looks at the traces of places and memories that remain even as the city has changed over time. Rather than explaining or interpreting history, I sought to convey the weight of memory that endures to this day by following the time he lived through and the places that shaped his life.
