DIRECTING INTENTION

When my father switched from his office job to construction work due to his hearing loss, I followed him into the tunnel where blasting was under way and noticed how closely its shape resembled the inner ear. As the tunnel nears completion, my father’s hearing will gradually collapse—whether as a side effect of the work environment or simply as part of natural aging. Our daily life is sustained by the underground world: tunnels, subways, and coal mines. While many people work to build these essential infrastructures and sometimes lose their lives, I wonder how many of us actually understand their value. I wanted to document the labor that makes the underground a place people can go and highlight the work of older generations in a shifting world.
