SYNOPSIS

DIRECTING INTENTION

SYNOPSIS

Since the 2022 Itaewon Halloween tragedy, social mourning has failed to reach the margins. Within this silence, stories unfold from those who hesitate yet strive to respond in their own ways. While documenting them, I drift among them too, and find that the sites of mourning hold no place for people like me. Fragmented stories are continually rewritten into three loosely defined parts, like a messy cluster of sticky notes.

DIRECTING INTENTION

As my sense of position blurred, my questions began to transform, and the meaning of 'tragedy-mourning' was continually reconstructed. I made this film to share this process and to reshape the framework of mourning. These experiences have led me to believe that the ethics of this work lies in not settling questions surrounding the disaster into familiar narratives. What kind of mourning space do we need? What can(not) cinema do alongside these questions? Beyond 'proper' mourning, I drift restlessly. Extra-mourningg.
