DIRECTING INTENTION

Two film directors, each crafting their own self-referential cinema, set out to shoot on a day when snow is forecast. Because they were once in love, their shared memories draw their shooting locations close together. Their work is saturated with resentment, self-reproach, and remorse regarding the past, oscillating between self-consolation and self-loathing. Yet how grandiose, and at the same time how threadbare, filmmaking as self-healing can be. It demands a significant amount of capital, the labor of others, and a simultaneous blend of feigning indifference and earnest courtship. It is an irony akin to saying, “This isn't my story, but please, listen to my story.” Like people caught doing something in secret, the two run into each other on the street and exchange awkward greetings. This encounter cannot restore their lost time or feelings. Even so, the two directors accept the pain and the risk and step into the space-time of reenactment. And their colleagues willingly join them, waiting for a spring snow with a fifty-fifty chance of falling.
