SYNOPSIS
300만 원. 만화가 지망생 한송이와 화가 고순이가 가진 돈 전부이다. 둘은 함께 작업실을 구하기로 한다. 지하에 있는 낡은 목욕탕. 이 공간이 영원히 머물러야 할 ‘자리’가 되어 버리면 어떡하지? 막연한 두려움이 마음속에 자리 잡을 무렵, 폭우에 작업실이 물에 잠긴다.
그리고 갑자기 순이의 손이 움직이지 않는다. 류마티스 관절염. 그림을 그리는 일은 점점 힘들어진다. 두 사람은 처음으로 다투게 되고, 순이는 목욕탕을 나가 버린다. 송이에게 남은 것은 텅 빈 작업실, 순이가 팔지 못한 그림들, 그리고 여전히 찾지 못한 ‘자리’뿐이다.
이제는 제대로 걷기조차 힘겨워진 순이를 위해, 송이는 친구의 작품들이 세상과 만날 수 있도록 전시회를 열기로 결심한다. 지하 목욕탕에서 하늘을 꿈꾸던 두 사람은, 과연 자신들만의 ‘자리’를 찾을 수 있을까?
DIRECTING INTENTION
이 영화는 두 예술가에 관한 이야기이지만, 사실 예술 그 자체에 대한 이야기는 아닙니다. 아르바이트를 전전하며 간신히 월세를 마련해야 하는 현실 속에서, 예술이란 결국 아무도 대가를 지불하지 않는 시간에 만들어지는 것이니까요.
우리는 이 영화에 불안정한 주거 환경이 주는 습하고 위태로운 질감과, 그와 대비되는 담백한 유머, 그리고 평범한 일상의 친밀함을 함께 담아내고자 했습니다. 그들에게 ‘자리’란 사람이 살고, 그의 작업이 만들어지는 공간입니다. 결국 송이와 순이를 지탱하는 것은 거창한 것이 아닙니다. 긴 하루 끝에 함께 나누는 식사, 무심코 건네는 격려의 말, 그저 곁에 있어 주는 누군가의 존재 같은 것들이죠.
꿈과 월세 사이에서 매일 흔들리는 모든 이들의 곁에, 이 영화가 잠시나마 머물 수 있기를 바랍니다.

SYNOPSIS
Three million won (about US$2,000) is all aspiring cartoonist HAN Song-i and painter GO Soon-i have between them. They turn an abandoned semi-basement bathhouse into a studio and home, where shared meals, everyday conversation, and quiet encouragement make a precarious life bearable. But as mold and flooding overtake the room and rheumatoid arthritis takes hold of Soon-i’s hands, both their refuge and friendship begin to fail. The two women give up their art and drift apart, until Song-i sets out to bring Soon-i’s paintings into the world through an exhibition. Can two women who dreamed of the sky from below ground find a place of their own, and perhaps become that place for each other?
DIRECTING INTENTION
This is a film about two artists, but it is not really about art. It is about what it does to a person to choose, month after month, between the work she wants to make and a room she can afford. When rent is pieced together from one part-time shift after another, art is what you make in the hours no one pays for. We wanted the film to hold the damp, precarious texture of unstable housing alongside dry humor and the intimacy of ordinary days. To us, a place is not simply a room one can afford. It is somewhere a person and her work do not have to disappear. What carries Song-i and Soon-i, in the end, is nothing grand. A meal shared at the end of a long day. A word of encouragement offered in passing. Someone simply being there. For anyone who wavers each day between a dream and making rent, we hope this film can sit beside them for a while.
