SYNOPSIS

원인을 알 수 없는 수면병에 걸린 군인들이 과거 학교였던 건물에 임시로 마련된 병원으로 이송된다. 수많은 기억이 깃들어 있는 이 공간은 주부이자 자원봉사자인 젠지라에게 새로운 깨달음을 안겨주는 세계가 된다. 젠지라는 가족 중 아무도 면회를 오지 않는 잘생긴 군인 잇을 돌보며 그의 곁을 지킨다. 그녀는 초능력을 이용해 혼수상태에 빠진 군인들과 이들의 사랑하는 사람들이 소통할 수 있도록 돕는 젊은 영매 켕과 친구가 된다. 의사들은 군인들의 불안한 꿈을 진정시키기 위해 색채 광선 치료를 비롯한 다양한 방법을 시도한다. 그러던 중 젠지라는 기묘한 글과 설계도 같은 스케치로 가득한 잇의 수수께끼 같은 공책을 발견한다. 군인들이 겪는 불가사의한 증상은 병원 지하에 자리한 신화 속 고대 유적지와 관련이 있을지도 모른다. 마법과 치유, 사랑과 꿈이 어우러지는 가운데, 젠지라는 자신과 주변 세계에 대한 더 깊은 깨달음으로 나아가는 섬세하고도 따뜻한 여정을 시작한다.

DIRECTING INTENTION

어린 시절, 어두운 교실에 앉아 말라리아에 걸려 고통받는 만화 속 인물을 바라보던 기억이 난다. 그 인물은 자기 머리만 한 모기에 팔을 물렸고, 여러 겹의 담요를 덮은 채 몸을 떨고 있었다. 왜 선생님들이 늘 질병에 관한 영화를 상영했는지는 알 수 없는 일이다. 우리는 뎅기열, 구충병, 상피병, 말라리아 등 온갖 질병이 가져오는 참혹한 고통을 목격해야 했다.
부모님은 두 분 모두 의사였다. 그래서 나는 십 대가 될 때까지 병원 관사에서 자랐다. 작은 마을에 있던 그 병원은 나의 놀이터였다. 학교와 집은 온갖 질병에 관한 기억으로 가득했다. 영화감독이 된 이후, 나는 여러 작품에서 질병이라는 주제를 탐구해 왔으며 병원을 주요 공간으로 등장시켰다.
<찬란함의 무덤>을 구상하면서 나는 사람들이 오로지 잠만 자는 수많은 방을 상상했다. 그러나 그들은 각자 자신만의 차원, 자신만의 안식처 어딘가에 머물고 있다. 최근 들어 나 역시 그런 상황에 놓이는 상상을 하곤 한다. 지난 수십 년 동안 태국에서 살아오면서 나는 점점 더 많은 시간을 잠으로 보내기 시작했다는 사실을 깨달았다. 꿈을 기록하기 시작했고, 꿈속에서 수많은 영화를 만들기도 했다.
나는 이 영화를, 열병을 앓고 있는 국가, 태국에 대한 성찰로 써내려 갔다. 이 작품은 나의 고향인 콘깬(Khon Kaen)에서 모든 이야기가 펼쳐지는 첫 번째 영화가 될 것이다. 동시에 이 영화는 초등학교, 병원, 도서관, 호수처럼 기생충처럼 내게 달라붙어 떠나지 않는 장소들에 대한 지극히 개인적인 초상이기도 하다. 이 영화 속 잠든 사람들처럼 나 역시 현실이라는 병을 외면하고, 그들과 함께 영원히 계속되는 꿈속으로 피신한다.

SYNOPSIS

Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to a temporary clinic in a former school. The memory-filled space becomes a revelatory world for housewife and volunteer Jenjira, as she watches over Itt, a handsome soldier with no family visitors. She befriends young medium Keng who uses her psychic powers to help loved ones communicate with the comatose men. Doctors explore ways, including coloured light therapy, to ease the men’s troubled dreams. Jen discovers Itt’s cryptic notebook of strange writings and blueprint sketches. There may be a connection between the soldiers’ enigmatic syndrome and the mythic ancient site that lies beneath the clinic. Magic, healing, romance and dreams are all part of Jen’s tender path to a deeper awareness of herself and the world around her.

DIRECTING INTENTION

I remember as a schoolboy sitting in the dark watching a cartoon character succumb to malaria. He was bitten in the arm by a mosquito the size of his head. He trembled under the layers of blankets. It’s a mystery why my teachers always projected films about sicknesses. We were exposed to the wretchedness of dengue fever, hookworm disease, elephantiasis, malaria, and so on.

My parents are doctors. As a result, I grew up in hospital housing until I was a teenager. This small town hospital was my playground. The school and my home were full of memorable illnesses. On becoming a filmmaker, I have explored the theme of sickness and featured hospitals in many of my films.

For Cemetery of Splendour, I imagine numerous rooms where people do nothing but sleep. Yet they are somewhere in their own dimension, their own shelter. Lately I’ve fantasised being in this situation. In Thailand in the course of the past decades, I have noticed that I started to sleep more. I have started to jot down my dreams. I have produced many movies, in dreams.

I write this film as a rumination on Thailand, a feverish nation. It will be the first film that takes place entirely in my hometown, Khon Kaen. It’s also a very personal portrait of the places that have latched onto me like parasites - the elementary school, the hospital, the library, the lake. Like the sleepers in this film, I shun the malady of reality, and together we take refuge in dreams of forever.
