DIRECTING INTENTION

“There’s a bomb inside you. Why not turn it into a film?”
Director Miwa Nishikawa said these words after hearing how I had felt stifled during my years at a Korean school in Japan and stepped into Japanese society as though making an escape. I was working as an assistant director at the time. Her words became the starting point for this film, prompting me to confront something I had left unresolved within myself for many years. Yet the sensitivity of the subject made it difficult to find people willing to help bring the film to life, and I was constantly anxious about whether I could see it through to the end. Even so, there were people who sustained me, insisting that “this film deserves to be made.” It was only thanks to them that I finally managed to complete it. Words cannot express my gratitude. With the number of Korean schools in Japan having declined sharply over the past decade, I hope this film will help more people recognize the presence of the children who attend them.
