SYNOPSIS

DIRECTING INTENTION

SYNOPSIS

Strong women. Women who fight back. Women who keep running. Filmmaker Yeonjeong has always wanted to film such women, and has long dreamed of directing a female-led action film. But she has not made a film in ten years. One day, as her screenplay hits a creative wall, Yeonjeong finds herself inexplicably drawn to a jiu-jitsu academy. Despite her ambition to make a film that “breaks through with the whole body,” she finds her own body freezing at another person’s touch, as control repeatedly slips away from her. She realizes that she has never truly looked at her own body. Pinned down and defeated again and again on the mat, Yeonjeong finally faces the truth she has long hidden: the image of the strong woman she had been so fixated on was, in fact, born from her desire to escape the memory of assault and from the guilt she carried over the feeling that she had not been able to protect herself.
Recovery is more than a documentary about learning jiu-jitsu. It is a chronicle of learning how not to tap out against the overwhelming opponent called trauma, and a struggle to reclaim the body she had left in the hands of others. The film reveals that the “action” Yeonjeong longed to create lies not in dazzling camerawork, but in the very moment she lifts up the body that was once paralyzed by fear.

DIRECTING INTENTION

For a long time, I dreamed of making an action film centered on a female protagonist. Yet, trapped in the suffocating reality of being unable to bring a film to life, standing in front of the camera myself—rather than hiding behind the safety mechanism of fiction—became the only way to directly confront who I was. Although Recovery borrows the form of a documentary, it is essentially my first action film, built upon a carefully designed plot, with emotions reworked into tactics. To me, action is not a spectacle of violence. It is a 'transition of state'—raising a body once pinned to the floor, flipping the position, and reclaiming sovereignty and dignity over a shattered life.
This film does not stop at a private confession picking at old wounds. Instead of trapping trauma within a frame of pain, it is a physical experiment carried out to reclaim my body as my own, re-narrativizing experience through the language of the body and cinematic mise-en-scène. Waves keep crashing, and balance must be found anew every single time. Now, on the screen, I redefine myself not as a victim, but as the agent of action and the director who pushes the narrative forward through the raw language of the body.
