SYNOPSIS
지난 새벽 화롄에서 지진이 발생했어요. 중국에서 온 여행객들이 매몰되었다고 해요. 이곳 타이난을 덮친 지진으로부터 꼭 2년이 되는 날이에요. 대지가 요동치던 그날 새벽은 쉽사리 잊히지가 않아요. 제 고향 난터우에서 일어났던 지진을 어머니는 기억하시나요? 저는 그때 어머니의 뱃속에 있었겠죠. 지진 소식에 타이완 섬 전역이 귀 기울이고 있어요. 매몰된 사람들이 구조되었으면 좋겠어요. 지난 가을, 한국에서 온 남자를 알게 되었어요. 그는 이곳 타이난에서 열린 영화제에 참석하기 위해 타이완에 왔다고 했어요. 그가 부산으로 돌아간 뒤 한 통의 메시지를 받았어요. 진먼 섬에 함께 가 줄 수 있냐는 내용의 메시지였어요. 9월엔 진먼 섬에 가게 될지도 몰라요.
DIRECTING INTENTION
동아시아 지역은 일본이 일으킨 전쟁의 종전과 동시에 내전 상황에 빠져든다. 중국 대륙과 한반도에서 발발한 두 내전은 종전 선언 없이 중국과 타이완, 북한과 남한이라는 체제를 낳았다. 조각난 채 접경을 이루고 있는 이 국가들에는 전투만이 정지된 기이한 상태가 지속되고 있다. 우리는 이 기이한 상태를 평화라고 부른다.
전후의 불안은 집단의식 속 다양한 군상과 함께 기이한 평화의 징후적 형상이 되어 타이완 해협과 대한 해협 사이를 흘러간다.
다큐멘터리 <해협>은 동아시아를 가로지르며 어머니에게 보내는 딸의 편지 형식을 빌려 이 기이한 현재를 표류하는 ‘얼굴과 풍경’의 기원을 그려낸다.

SYNOPSIS
Last night, an earthquake occurred in Hualien. Tourists from China are reported to be buried. It’s been exactly 2 years since the earthquake in Tainan. The night of the earthquake that shook the earth upside down, cannot be easily forgotten. Mom, do you remember the earthquake in Nantou? I was still in your womb then. Taiwan is in a state of tension at the news of the earthquake. I hope the buried people will be rescued soundly. Last fall, I have met a man from South Korea. He had come to Tainan to attend the film festival. After his return to Busan, I received a letter. He asked me if I could visit Kinmen Island with him. I might be visiting Kinmen Island in September.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Following the end of war aroused by Japan, the East Asian region falls into a phase of civil war. With no declarations of end of war, the two civil wars in China and Korea, each result in the establishment of two separate regimes: China and Taiwan, North Korea and South Korea. Only direct military actions have ceased, and the divided bordering nations continue to exist in this certain state of eccentricity. We call this state of eccentricity, peace. The anxiety from the aftermaths of war, becomes a symptomatic form of this eccentric peace, and flows along the Taiwan Strait and the Korea Strait, alongside with other different faces and forms in our collective consciousness.
The documentary, <Letters to Buriram> illustrates, the origin of these ‘faces and scenes’ that float in our eccentric present, by means of a letter sent from a daughter to her mother across East Asia.
