SYNOPSIS

DIRECTING INTENTION

SYNOPSIS

A seaside temple said to grant everyone one wish. Twenty-four-year-old Yubin prays for a way to pay off his debt faster. After graduating from a technical high school, he handed his money to a con man introduced by a friend and was left with a crushing debt. Four years of rotating day and night shifts at a factory in the Noksan Industrial Complex haven't come close to covering it. There is only one option left: borrow money from his friends.
Minyoung, about the closest friend he had in school, offers to come along, and Hyesung, whom they run into in Yeongdo after years apart, joins them. The three set off in Yubin's car, driving around Busan and beyond to look up old classmates. With every reunion, time flows back to the classroom where they once turned lathes and learned to weld. How are his friends doing these days? More to the point, will Yubin manage to borrow any money? So begins a journey that is funny, yet somehow bitter.

DIRECTING INTENTION

In the summer of 2018, the kids we met in a mechanical engineering classroom at Busan Technical High School were ordinary vocational students who simply wanted to get jobs and start earning money as soon as possible. We recorded their passage from school to the factory floor. Four years after graduation, our protagonist Yubin was swindled, and as his friends were drawn in one after another as fellow victims, their bonds began to break apart. These workers, barely past twenty, who had hoped to save up quickly to open a small shop or take their parents on a trip, had become both victims and perpetrators to one another.
We asked ourselves what we could do. Above all, we wanted to restore a broken friendship. Together with them, we built a journey in which Yubin visits his old friends to borrow money, and we had the friends play themselves. It was a somewhat reckless attempt, made in the hope that by playing themselves on camera, they might come to understand one another and mend their relationships. We wanted, somehow, to bring them back to the friends they had been at school. Perhaps Yubin and the others wanted the same. Whatever the outcome, the process itself became the film.
At every stop, his friends opened up about their work and their lives, and we layered those conversations over scenes from their school days. At the end of the journey, rather than settling who among them was most to blame, the friends choose to give each other one more chance. Looking back now that the film is finished, perhaps My Class was never so much about a Korean society that is merciless to the working class as about young men trying to piece a broken friendship back together.
