SYNOPSIS
한 아이가 바닥에 그림을 그리며 한 남자를 상상한다. 그는 악당이다. 교회를 잃고 물과 전기마저 끊긴 방에 홀로 남은 전직 목사. 죽기로 마음먹은 여름밤, 그는 칼을 품고 쓰레기봉투를 든 채 집을 나선다. 그러나 쓰레기로 넘치는 도시에는 버릴 곳조차 없다. 맨발로 밤의 골목을 헤매던 그는 낯선 사람들과 얽히고, 바닥에 그림을 그리는 그 아이를 만난다. 아이는 오늘 밤 부모와 여행을 떠날 거라며, 집에 두고 온 물고기에게 먹이를 달라고 부탁한다. 남자는 아이가 알려준 주소를 찾아간다.
DIRECTING INTENTION
보이지 않는다는 것은 존재하지 않는다는 뜻이 아니다. 나는 오히려 사라진 존재가 남겨진 사람들의 세계를 어떻게 바꾸는지에 대해 이야기하고 싶었다.
남자는 아이를 구할 수 없다. 죽은 물고기를 다시 살릴 수도 없고, 오래 비어 있던 집에서 아이를 되찾아올 수도 없다. 그가 할 수 있는 것은 그곳에 도착하는 것뿐이다. 죽은 물고기 앞에 서고, 아무도 없는 방의 공기를 마시고, 자신이 알지 못했던 한 죽음의 자리에 머무는 것.
나는 이 행위가 영화가 할 수 있는 일과 닮아 있다고 생각했다.
영화는 이미 일어난 죽음을 되돌릴 수 없다. 설명할 수 없는 고통에 완전한 이유를 부여할 수도 없다. 그러나 누군가 사라진 자리를 바라보고, 그곳에 조금 더 오래 머물며, 쉽게 지나쳐 버렸던 존재를 다시 우리의 시간 안으로 불러올 수는 있다. 나에게 영화를 만드는 일은 그런 의미에서 애도의 행위다.

SYNOPSIS
A child draws on the ground, imagining a man. He is a villain: a former pastor who has lost his church, left alone in a room where water and electricity have been cut off. On a summer night when he has decided to die, he leaves home with a knife tucked against his body and a garbage bag in his hand. But the city is overflowing with trash, and there is nowhere left to throw anything away. Wandering through the night alleys barefoot, he becomes entangled with strangers and encounters the child drawing on the ground. She tells him she is leaving on a trip with her parents that night and asks him to feed her fish at home. The man goes looking for the address she gives him.
DIRECTING INTENTION
To be unseen is not the same as not to exist. I wanted to explore how someone who has disappeared continues to change the world of those left behind. The man cannot save the girl. He cannot bring the dead fish back to life, nor can he recover her from the house that has stood empty for so long. All he can do is arrive. He stands before the dead fish, breathes the air of the empty room, and remains in the place of a death he never knew. I came to think that this act resembles what cinema does. A film cannot undo a death that has already happened. Nor can it give a complete reason to suffering that resists explanation. But it can look at the place someone has left behind, linger there a little longer, and call back into our time those we too easily passed by. In this sense, filmmaking is, for me, an act of mourning.
