SYNOPSIS
파랑(波浪): 바다의 표면부에서 일어나는 물결, 바닷물의 변화가 물결 모양으로 주변으로 퍼져 나가는 현상.
1948년, 붉은파랑(波浪)이 일렁이기 시작했다.
<붉은파랑>은 내가 발을 딛고 살아가고 있는 여수와 부산,
그리고 그 사이 물결 따라 겹겹이 쌓인 붉은파랑의 존재들을 짚어 나간다.
바다 위로 실어 보내는 우리의 기록이자 흔적이
깊은 바닷속 여전히 붉게 물든 채 머물러 있는 파랑에 닿기를 바란다.
DIRECTING INTENTION
<붉은파랑>은 여수와 부산, 바다 깊은 곳에 잠식되어 있는 기억과 흔적을 찾아가는 시도에서 출발한다.
1948년 여순사건은 국가의 진압 과정에서 수많은 희생을 낳았다.
이후 정부는 국민보도연맹을 결성하였고
6·25전쟁 이후 빨갱이 집단으로 간주하여 전국적으로 민간인 학살을 자행했다.
여수와 부산, 두 도시의 주요 학살 장소 너머엔 바다가 마주하고 있었고
여수에서 부산으로 이어진 국가폭력은 그렇게 바다를 따라 흘러왔다.
떨어져 있는 두 고향에서 같은 마음으로 흐르고 있는 붉은파랑들은
기록조차 사진조차 남지 않은 이들을 기억하며 연결된다.
<붉은파랑>은 여수와 부산, 과거와 현재, 기억 사이를 오가며
바다를 따라 흘러온 붉은파랑을 담아내고자 한다.

SYNOPSIS
Parang (波浪): Waves occurring on the surface of the sea; a phenomenon in which fluctuations in seawater spread outward in the form of waves.
In 1948, a “red wave (parang)” began to stir.
Red Wave traces the existence of these "red waves"—layered one upon another along the currents between Yeosu and Busan, the places where I live and walk today.
I hope that these records and traces—cast out upon the sea—will reach those "red waves" that still linger, stained in crimson, deep beneath the ocean’s surface.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Red Wave begins as an attempt to uncover the memories and traces submerged deep within the seas off Yeosu and Busan.
In 1948, the state’s suppression of Yeosu–Suncheon 10·19 claimed countless lives.
Subsequently, the government established the Bodo League (National Guidance League), and after the outbreak of the Korean War, branding its members as reds (ppalgaengi) or communists, the state massacred civilians across the country.
In both Yeosu and Busan, the sites of these major massacres lie facing the sea; the state violence that spanned from Yeosu to Busan thus flowed along the coastline. Flowing with one heart between two distant hometowns, the red waves connect us to those who left behind no records, not even photographs.
Moving between Yeosu and Busan—between the past and the present, and across the realm of memory—Red Wave seeks to capture these red waves that have flowed along the sea.
