SYNOPSIS
컨트리클럽에 새로 들어온 티걸(골프공 받침대를 꽂는 직원) 이사벨은 클럽 회장인 팔랑카 박사에게 묘한 끌림을 느낀다. 그러나 클럽의 말끔한 외관 아래 감춰진 폭력적인 실체를 조금씩 알아가면서, 팔랑카 박사를 향한 순수한 연정으로 시작된 감정이 사실은 두 사람 사이의 더욱 불길한 과거에 뿌리를 두고 있음을 깨닫게 된다.
DIRECTING INTENTION
나에게 골프장은 이 나라 필리핀을 보여 주는 완벽한 은유이다. 이 나라는 수많은 사람이 땀 흘려 일하고 가꾸는 광대한 땅이지만, 결국 그곳을 누리는 것은 소수의 특권층뿐이기 때문이다. 골프장은 필리핀의 식민지 과거와 오늘날의 탈식민적 현실을 잘 드러내는 공간이기도 하다. 필리핀 최초의 골프장들은 미군 기지 안에 있었고, 식민 지배자들이 떠난 뒤에는 현지 지배 엘리트들이 그 공간을 차지했다. 현재 필리핀에는 200개가 넘는 골프장이 있다. 영화 <필리피냐나>를 통해 이 특수한 환경에 내재한, 눈에 보이지 않는 구조적 폭력에 형태와 질감, 소리를 부여하고자 한다. 영화는 서로 상반된 두 시선을 통해 이 작은 세계를 탐색한다. 위계 구조의 맨 아래에 있는 이사벨의 시선과 맨 위에 있는 클라라의 시선이다. 이들의 눈을 통해 바라보다 보면, 골프채가 골프공을 때리는 소리가 총성이 울리는 소리와 그리 다르지 않게 들릴지도 모른다.

SYNOPSIS
New tee-girl Isabel feels strangely drawn to Dr. Palanca, the president of the country club where she works. But as Isabel starts to piece together a more violent picture of what lies beneath the country club’s pristine surface, she eventually realizes that what began as an innocent infatuation with Dr. Palanca is actually rooted in a more sinister shared history.
DIRECTING INTENTION
To my mind, a golf course is the perfect metaphor for my country, the Philippines—in that a golf course is a huge plot of land that is toiled on and worked on by so many people, but ultimately, enjoyed by only a privileged few. Golf courses are also quite representative of my country’s colonial past and current postcolonial reality. The first golf courses in the Philippines were on American military bases, and when our colonizers left, these spaces were taken over by the local ruling elite; now there are over 200 golf courses in the Philippines. With FILIPIÑANA, I aim to give shape, texture, and sound to the invisible structural violence inherent to this very specific milieu. In the film, we explore this microcosm from two opposing perspectives—from the bottom of the hierarchical structure via Isabel as well as from the top, via Clara. Through their eyes, one may find that the sound of a golf club hitting a golf ball may not sound unlike the sound of a gunshot going off.
