SYNOPSIS
오랫동안 집 안에 고립된 채 프리랜서로 살아가는 현정에게 햄스터 해미는 유일한 위로이자 세상과 이어진 마지막 연결 고리다. 사람과의 직접적인 관계를 피한 채, 현정은 엄마와의 전화 통화만으로 최소한의 관계를 유지한다. 현정을 지나치게 걱정하며 아직 아이처럼 대하는 엄마와, 그런 관심을 부담스러워하며 거리를 두려는 현정 사이의 통화는 늘 어긋나 있다.
해미의 생일날, 해미가 갑자기 사라지고 현정은 해미를 찾기 위해 오랜만에 집 밖으로 나선다. 낯선 공간과 사람들을 마주하며 자신이 쌓아 온 고립의 벽이 흔들리기 시작하고, 해미의 부재는 현정의 일상뿐 아니라 늘 형식적으로 이어지던 엄마와의 전화에도 미묘한 변화를 만들어 낸다.
결국 해미가 남긴 이별의 흔적을 통해, 현정은 자신이 한 존재에 얼마나 의존해 살아왔는지를 직면하게 되고… 이후 현정은 엄마의 전화 너머에 있던 감정에도 처음으로 마음을 열기 시작하며, 멈춰 있던 자신의 삶을 다시 정리할 준비를 한다.
DIRECTING INTENTION
이 작품은 자기 고립이 어떻게 한편으로는 안식처가 되고, 또 한편으로는 삶을 버티게 하는 방식이 될 수 있는지를 탐구합니다. 공동 연출을 맡은 저희 협업 과정 또한 영화 속 핵심적인 관계를 닮아 있었습니다. 약 20년의 나이 차이와 서로 다른 국가에서 성장한 배경 때문에 우리는 종종 같은 상황을 전혀 다른 시각으로 바라보며 대화를 나누고는 했습니다. 때로는 이러한 차이가 서로를 이해하는 방식을 어렵게 만들었고, 이는 영화 속 현정과 어머니의 관계를 떠올리게 했습니다. 저희는 이러한 순간들을 피하기보다, 이를 통해 영화 속 세대와 가족 사이의 간극이라는 하나의 주제를 더욱 깊이 들여다볼 수 있는 기회로 받아들였습니다.
저희는 어느 한 세대만이 세상을 올바르게 이해한다고 말하고 싶지 않습니다. 오히려 서로 다른 시선 사이에 존재하는 틈과 그 간격에 관심을 두고 있습니다. 오랫동안 혼자 있는 것은 편안하면서도 두려운 일입니다. 세상과 거리를 둘수록 우리는 더 안전하다고 느낄 수 있지만, 정작 누군가에게 손을 내미는 방법을 조금씩 잊어버리기도 합니다. 이 영화를 통해 우리는 그 거리를 조금씩 좁혀 주는 조용한 순간들을 바라보고자 했습니다. 서로의 이야기에 귀 기울이는 일이 공감의 시작이 되고, 다시 연결될 가능성이 그 안에서 피어나기를 바랍니다.

SYNOPSIS
Hyunjeong, a reclusive freelance worker, lives a carefully contained life, finding comfort only in her pet hamster, Hammy. Avoiding in-person relationships, she maintains her sole human connection through frequent phone calls with her overprotective mother, whom she keeps at an emotional distance.
When Hammy suddenly disappears, Hyunjeong is forced outside her apartment for the first time in a long while. As she searches, unfamiliar spaces and brief encounters begin to unsettle the fragile routine she depends on. Hammy’s absence also shifts the rhythm of her conversations with her mother, exposing the quiet distance between them.
Through this loss, Hyunjeong confronts her dependence on a single presence and begins, hesitantly, to open herself to the world and to her mother.
DIRECTING INTENTION
This film explores how self-isolation can become both a refuge and a means of survival. Our collaboration as co-directors reflects one of the central relationships within the film. Separated by nearly twenty years in age and raised in different countries, we often found ourselves approaching conversations from contrasting perspectives. At times, these differences challenged the way we communicated, echoing the dynamic between Hyunjeong and her mother. Rather than resisting these moments, we embraced them as an opportunity to deepen the film's exploration of generational and familial divides.
Rather than suggesting that any one generation holds the "right" way to understand the world, we are interested in the spaces between perspectives. Being alone for a long time can feel both comforting and frightening. The further we retreat from others, the safer we may feel, yet we also risk forgetting how to reach out when we need connection most. Through this film, we hope to observe the quiet moments that bridge those distances, where listening becomes an act of empathy and the possibility of reconnection emerges.
