SYNOPSIS
‘(Welcome to) The Planet of Orchids’ is a cinematic anthology exploring the fascinating lives of orchids and their intricate relationships with neighbouring species. In this film, orchids are portrayed as Indigenous beings who have thrived despite human colonisation. Orchids take centre stage as protagonists, unfolding their unique or ordinary narratives from a plant-centred viewpoint. Orchids reveal the complex dynamics of the more-than-human community, inviting human audiences to the ‘Planet of Orchids’.
DIRECTING INTENTION
The era of the Anthropocene and climate crisis: Humanity is now facing the consequences of its colonial domination over nature. What if humans could perceive the Earth as an 'ecosphere', the way the more-than-humans view the surrounding environment? Could humans be companions of neighbouring species, rather than colonisers?
‘(Welcome to) The Planet of Orchids’ is a culmination of my interdisciplinary research that weaves together multispecies ethnography, conservation ecology and ecocinema. Through this multifaceted approach, this film presents a 'plant-centred perspective’, challenging typical human understanding of the more-than-human realm and stimulating profound connections between plants and humans.
