SYNOPSIS

During the Korean New Year’s holidays, family members gather at the eldest’s home, where jobless siblings Sumin and Jungmin struggle to escape their judgments. Meanwhile, their successful cousin Jae-young, who has just been accepted into Seoul National University, receives all the praise and attention. A rivalry fueled by jealousy and pride emerges between the cousins, leading to a heated game of "Yut-nori," a traditional Korean board game, betting on all the money from the New Year’s Day Allowances.

DIRECTING INTENTION

In this film, I've captured my emotions surrounding going home for the holidays. My elders no longer ask me about my life, and this may be because of my embarrassment. Sometimes the comments that they make during the holiday seasons can be hurtful. When I was young, I used to enjoy playing the traditional Korean board game Yut-nori with my cousins during holidays, but as I grew older and listened to what the adults had to say, life itself felt like a game of Yut-nori. They would say things like, I must go to a good university, get a good job, get married, all because they love me. But I want to show in this film that life is not just a game where one who reaches the end first, wins.
