SYNOPSIS

Tam, a hardworking employee at a wedding venue, discovers her husband’s infidelity through a live TV broadcast. Instead of confronting him, she seeks to win back his love with the help of a powerful shaman. Tam’s daughter, Ha, disapproves of her mother’s way of handling her father’s affair but has stopped trying to reason with her. She just dreams of fleeing home for a brighter future abroad with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, a mysterious being called the House Spirit starts to lurk beneath their cracked leaky ceiling, visible only to the two of them.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Everyone has probably encountered at least once in their life a middle-aged woman who is full of complaints, constantly nags people, loves to spread gossip, complains about almost everything, and talks too much. Why on earth is there such an annoying creature? For me, all those characteristics are just so charming. These women have fulfilled their duties to the world - they married very young, worked hard to earn money, and dedicated their lives to their children's happiness. One day they look in the mirror and see their breasts have sagged, their children have left, and their husbands are pleasing themselves with young women online. And themselves? Nothing remains. No one pays attention to them anymore. Nobody thinks that middle-aged women want breakfast in bed, romantic dinners, or beautiful roses. And they panic. They try to tell the whole world that, hey, I’m still here, I have my wants and needs, I have these strong desires, but I’m invisible, what do I do? Those silent cries for help ended up turning them into naggy women, which I find comedic and amusing in their own very lovely way.
In the film, there are also other women from different age groups, with their very own dreams and fantasy. All of them are trying to achieve what they want, they don’t just sit there and wait for things to happen to them. I wanted to ask women whether these fantasies truly make them happy. I've made a trilogy of short films dedicated to this theme, mainly in the form of black comedy. Through these films, I've tried various approaches and gained confidence in the direction for my first feature film. I didn’t want to make a typical melancholic and emotional film, where we always see these sad women ranting about their sad lives. I wanted to make films where people can laugh a lot, but left with a bittersweet feeling. In Vietnamese, there's an expression that means 'laughing while holding back tears' (bitter-sweet laughter). It refers to times when situations are so sad that you can't help but laugh. I think this expression perfectly represents the situation of middle-aged women. I wanted to tell their stories in this way.
