SYNOPSIS
The lives and bodies of Sung-hee and Su-young have been sites of ceaseless exploitation. The Capital tried to render their works invisible, and erase their very existence. And Sasang embraces the two people and their lives. This documentary unfolds the lives of those who live in Sasang, the “Town on Sand,” which preserves the scars left by the claws of the Capital.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Sasang is my hometown of 30 years, and a place that I have been observing for nine years. Sung-hee and Su-young are residents of Sasang, where funerals are held on a daily basis on the graveyards where homes are buried. One has lost his job, and the other failed to keep his community together. The two patriarchs, who were once called the “pillars of industry,” now roam the town of Sasang like ghosts, defeated and depressed. Watching their lives unfold, I have witnessed the vicious nature of the Capital that constantly builds castles of sand only to tear them down. Then, I would ask myself, what should I record, and how? Sasang – The Town on Sand represents my journey looking for answers to this question that has been following me around for all these years.
