At the beginning of the movie, the father of protagonist Boga dies. His death is not really a surprise for the young man: he accepts it as part of the cycle of life. For Boga, who lives in the endless water and marine lands of the Parana River in the north of Argentina, the death of his father mainly means freedom. He is used to earning his living as a fisherman and sets off with his boat, without any real destination. On the way, Boga meets El Pampa, a real river rat with a past. El Pampa has been shot and doesn’t think he has long to live. He asks Boga to take some money to La Estela. This sets off a series of violent events.

<사우스이스트>는 현대판 노마드(nomad) 영화의 전형이라고 할 수 있다. 아르헨티나의 파라냐강의 끝없는 갈대밭을 배경으로 낯선 장소들, 피와 남성의 땀내음과 곤충, 그리고 가끔 불어오는 열대의 폭풍이 만연한 이 영화는 헤밍웨이 스타일의 정서를 불러일으킨다. 길을 떠나려 하는, 그리고 그 길의 끝에 무엇이 있을지 모르는 오늘의 아르헨티나의 불확실함의 기운은 이 영화를 통해서도 여실히 드러나고 있다.
