SYNOPSIS
In winter of 2017, South Korea. Jun-geun, a university student having postponed his graduation for job seeking, gets kicked out of the dormitory because of his failure to enroll in winter sessions. He is obliged to get a room-and-board part-time job to survive the severe winter of eastern Korea. By chance, he finds a surfing guesthouse called “Welcome Guesthouse” and applies for the part-time job although he has never surfed before. While working there, he learns how to surf. One day, he gets into a quarrel with a typical rich guy, Sung-min, and agree on having a match in a month with the condition that the loser has to leave the sea. While Jun-geun trains with the help of Welcome Guesthouse seasonal members, his professor calls him to tell him of a job interview on the day of the match. Jun-geun finds it difficult to make a choice between the match and the interview, and the clock is ticking.
DIRECTING INTENTION
"The first Korean surfing film." The number of Korean surfers is growing rapidly and there are now 30,000 surfers. However, the interesting fact is that, unlike overseas where people start from an early age, the average age for Korean surfers to start surfing is late 20s to early 30s. The film starts from this fact. Surfing, a symbolic sport of youth, how come in Korea it is so hard to see youths on the beaches? How come there aren’t so many surfers in their 20s in Korea? It is diagnosed that Koreans in their 20s are too busy to surf. With college tuition fees over 2,500 dollars, official youth unemployment rate of 10 percent, real rate at 34.2 percent, 435,000 youths out of employment, there are just too many things to deal with, other than surfing. This film is made to give them 2 hours of break.
