SYNOPSIS
On a midsummer day, the snow falls. With no water and electricity, Tokyo is in chaos. Mami, a girl who just turned twenty, wakes up to find a mysterious girl in her room. She calls herself Beah. Something about her makes Mami nostalgic and it captures her heart. By living together, they in shock discover that Beah is from Hamelin Germany, and she is one of the children abducted by the pied piper in 1284.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Utopia is a film that is inspired by a traditional folk tale, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.” On June 26th, 1284, 130 children disappeared from the town of Hamelin in Germany. Mysteriousness and spookiness of this incident somehow led me to connect with Thomas More’s Utopia, a motif for my film that I wanted to borrow from.
What is it like to be a peaceful nation? Would there be equality for everyone? It hit me so hard when a catastrophic earthquake occured in 2011. Almost everyone got hurt mentally, and realized the change in their lives. At the same time, the facts that have been hidden over a long time suddenly came out. "What you need for your life could also take away your life."
I was finally able to finish writing the screenplay by taking in “the solar flare,” another catastrophe which would possibly occur in the future.
Kids who were kidnapped and lost their future will finally stand up and fight. I hope this film is going to be one of the answer to my question toward Hamelin’s story.
