SYNOPSIS

Migrant workers living and working in South Korea are discriminated at several levels. At one level, these migrant workers are “colored strangers” from poorer countries than South Korea. At another level, they are irregular and low-wage workers working in jobs that South Koreans refuse to do. And, still at another level, the migrant workers are unDocumentarymented workers who have no protection at all. The problems and discrimination that migrant workers face also are indicative of the problems of South Korean society itself. This project is a record of frank confessions of migrant workers as they honestly talk about all kinds of discrimination they confront every day. In doing so, it is a therapeutic process for them and a time of reflection for us. In their own voices, the migrant workers talk about the reasons why they came to South Korea and the difficulties they face in living in a totally different culture. Through their stories, we can trace the impact of neo-liberalism on individual lives.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Our situation with migrant workers is a reflection of Korean society as a whole. Our sickness as a people is apparent by the way we regard and treat these persons with utter disregard for their humanity. Using "migrant" and "workers" as touchstones, we have attempted to gather key words to the language that surrounds and describes them. From their perspective at the Politically neutral Myoungdong Cathedral, we attempt to talk of their position in South Korean society and what words they use to describe us. We hope this would not only be a healing experience for migrant workers but a look in the mirror for ourselves as well.
