SYNOPSIS
Ogu-gut is a shamanic ritual in which a shaman or exorcist comforts the soul of the dead and prays for their smooth passage into eternity. It is a festival for the living and the dead and essential art tradition in the history of festivals of Korea. The camera calmly follows the footsteps of Mr. Heo’s friends and the procedure of Ogu-gut through which a soul of the dead is being brought into the world of the living.
DIRECTING INTENTION
The Gut performed by a hereditary shaman tends to focus more on its artistic characteristics, livelihood and guest who are at the scene than the ritual itself. The ritual is conducted for the sake of the deceased one, but at the same time, it also carries a meaning of condolences and peace to the people left here. This is the interesting irony about Ogu-gut in a way that the mood of the ritual is not so mournful.
