TIME TABLE
SYNOPSIS

On a spring day, with cherry blossoms raining down like snow, Chun Hee moves into an old apartment near the hospital. When problems arise moving her grand piano into her new unit, Min Jun, who lives on the 15th floor, suggests keeping it at his place. This is how Chun Hee and Min Jun meet. Min Jun, an adoptee raised in Germany, works as a conductor and has returned to Korea to search for his birth mother. While waiting for news, Min Jun teaches piano to Chun Hee and encourages Seong Chan, an orphaned boy who dreams of becoming a pianist. Chun Hee had planned to leave the world at the exact same day and hour as her husband; they had an assisted suicide appointment scheduled. But death, as it sometimes does, came unexpectedly, and her husband had passed away before her. Every day, she meticulously cleans the piano and the Azera car he left behind. She clings to a line she once read: “Life is the endless process of wiping off dust. And death is nothing more than the accumulation of that dust.” As she polishes the piano and the car, she sees the past image of her husband - brightly smiling, free of smudges or wrinkles. “Whoever we might be, death is right before us.” As Chun Hee’s health slowly deteriorates, the appointment made for her and her husband’s assisted suicide approaches.

DIRECTING INTENTION

Recently, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands and his wife chose euthanasia to end their lives together. A few years prior, the director Jean-Luc Godard made the same decision. Currently, several countries permit euthanasia when a patient faces unbearable suffering, has no hope of improvement, and expresses a clear wish to die. Whoever we are, we are all fated to die someday. Just as our appearance, values, and lifestyles differ, so too can the means of our passing. Among these options, can't a conscious decision to die be one? I wanted to make a film that asks, "What kind of death will I face? What possessions do I truly have? What will I do in the face of death if I have no family?" and gives the audience a chance to contemplate these questions. I also aimed to show that just as life, death, and family can take many forms, there are diverse ways to communicate and share one's feelings.
