SYNOPSIS
Zhang Lu is a Chinese-Korean director who made 6 films from his first feature film, in 2004 till now. In the process of preparing his next film, , he looked for the shooting location in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in China which is his hometown and was also invited to a lot of film festivals and events as a noticeable director in Seoul, Korea that is his parents’ hometown. And he edited his film with French staffs in Beijing in China where he lives in now. There are always many different languages (like Korean, Chinese, Yanbian-dialect, French, Italian) and many questions about his life as a Chinese-Korean who lives in China and works in Korea and films around him. This documentary tries to give him hospitality as a ‘stranger’ himself ‘without any questions and conditions’ like what Jacques Derrida said.
DIRECTING INTENTION
Even though I made a documentary about Zhang Lu, it is still hard for me to answer if someone ask me who Zhang Lu really is. In the process of making this documentary, I realize that this work is not about to reveal the secret of the Zhang Lu but just to find the answer of my own question about him. I wonder what makes him to be surrounded by so many questions and why the ways of accepting him are so different from country to country. I think maybe that is because we are so fearful to admit that he is eventually a 'stranger' for us.
