I chose to drop out of my high school where all the students studied only to enter a college without considering and respecting characteristics of students, so that I can study what I want. However, unexpectedly people around me worry about me so much. Some adults tell me that I was puppyish; others that a 19-year-old student should live like the same age group. Even, there is a grownup who suspects that my choice was motivated by another adult. I already feel confused at this moment when I should start a new life after dropping out of school. Should I not have dropped out of school?

What does “dropping out of school” mean in Korea? It does not only mean that a student ends up a school. But in the reality of Korean society in which educational background refers to a social class, “dropping out of school” means “falling from the higher standard” or “getting rid of opportunities.” Most of us perceive that there are problems of school education. Nevertheless, we cannot think of leaving school. I, hereby who selected to drop out of school in 2012’s Korea, am holding a camera and want to record the point of views of the world on me.

영화 초반, 익명의 고등학교 선생님은 한동혁 학생과의 전화 통화 중 퉁명스러운 말투로 다른 교직원에게 묻는다. “그 자퇴하는 학생은 어디로 가면 됩니까!” 자신의 자퇴 과정과 갑작스러운 자유에서 생겨나는 불안감을 솔직하게 담아낸 이 다큐멘터리 영화에서 한동혁 감독의 주변인들(부모님, 선생님, 동급생)은 모두 하나같이 우려의 말을 건넨다. 전교 꼴찌를 해도 좋으니 학교만 다니라는 어머니와 왜 자퇴하느냐고 돌직구로 물어보는 동급생, 손주에게 학교를 안 다녀서 밉다고 말하는 할머니까지. 그런 우려의 말에 대한 한동혁 감독의 대답은 단 하나다. “난 영화 하고 싶어.” 그리고 바로 올해 4월 30일, 한동혁 ‘학생’은 고등학교를 자퇴하고 한동혁 ‘감독’이 되었다. 중학교 2학년, 영화 공부를 하고 싶다고 일기장에 적었던 소년의 첫 영화 <그 자퇴하는 학생은 어디로 가면 됩니까!>는 2012년 제4회 DMZ 국제다큐멘터리영화제, 제12회 퍼블릭액세스시민영상제, 그리고 서울독립영화제2012까지 안착했다. 호기롭게 출사표를 던진 한동혁 감독, 방년 19살이었다.
