SYNOPSIS

There are currently up to 600,000 people of Korean descent living in Japan. They are known as “Zainichi Koreans” in Japan and they face unique challenges navigating their daily lives in Japan as Koreans while maintaining their Korean identity. The director first met a Zainichi Korean in North Korea 18 years ago. This film is the record of his encounters with many others while travelling between Korea and Japan for the past 18 years.

DIRECTING INTENTION

I directed this film to show the history of Zainichi Koreans as a group, as well as the personal history of several individuals from four separate generations and their struggle to maintain their dignity in their lives.
