SYNOPSIS

A countryside boy settles on the rooftop of a city building. He soon becomes infatuated with a young woman who lives in a top floor apartment of the opposite building. Using a stolen remote control the boy playfully begins to interfere with her TV, but as his romantic obsession grows, he wants to control more of her life.

DIRECTING INTENTION

[Remote Control] is a film about human choice, about our hope and fear of future, about our destiny and about reality and imagination. Both leading characters of the film live in their illusionary world, dreaming to “fly away” from the reality. But both of them want to take the control over their own life to cope with their reality. The film follows and observes them when they face to the moment of making an important choice for them.
At the same time, the protagonist’s story is a metaphorical tale about Mongolian society nowadays. After emerging change of the system, Mongolian society is barely leaving its “puberty”. Like the main protagonist of the film, our society lives by great expectations and sweet dreams about bright future, while struggling to identify new values.
Connecting the rational plot with the poetic visualization of the irrational, I tried to develop a simple narrative into multi-layered contemporary tale with a strong visual form and style. The imaginative world has a great role in the dramaturgy and the aesthetic principles of [Remote Control]. However, tensions of Mongolian reality, which is a mixture of post-socialist challenges, fascinating nomadic heritage and strong Buddhist tradition will presented under the film’s poetic style, distinct atmosphere and lyrical intonation. All metaphors, symbols and allegories in the film have strong connections with "the reality." I wish that ]Remote Control] will strike a gentle balance between east and west, classical narrative and poetic constructions. As every Mongolian, I am trying to discover my own path in the rash globalizing modern world, while living in the cultural, historical and geopolitical crossroads that is modern-day Ulaanbaatar.
