SYNOPSIS
When families of the deceased and the May 18 Memorial Foundation announced a list of victims, Wi Sa-Yo found her son′s name, Jang Seung-He. She then asked for government recognition and compensation along with family members of other missing people. Government officials involved in the process of providing official recognition and compensation worried more about their colleagues safety than the pain of missing people′s families. The May 18 Memorial Foundation and other May 18 groups were also unsympathetic to missing people′s families because the government did not legally recognize their loved ones as missing. After the processing of applications for recognition, family members of missing people held a memorial service at May 18 Cemetery. The unpleasant atmosphere is clearly indicated by a red uniformed band and the complaints by families of officially recognized deceased, who see those without government approval as intruders in a cemetery where they do not belong.
DIRECTING INTENTION
As family members of people who remain missing from the May 18, 1980 Gwangju Uprising apply for official restoration of their loved one′s honor, I would like to talk about another kind of 'missing': the spirit of May unity.
