SYNOPSIS
“Hee mang(‘hope’)-ville,”, a village visible yet hidden, was formed when evacuees and victims of the Korean War were resettled after the country's liberation. Over time, due to the proliferation of brothels, it became colloquially known as "Hee mae(‘sell’)-ville"(prostitution area). Despite this transformation and stigma, long-term residents continue to call this place home, their lives intertwined with a community that outsiders recognize only as a red-light district.
DIRECTING INTENTION
In "Hee mae(‘sell’)-ville," a place infamous for prostitution, ordinary villagers also make their homes. Despite their clear existence, these residents are marginalized to the point of invisibility. By exploring their lives, which have remained unrecorded and unnoticed, we find ourselves tangled with the paradoxes of humanity, alienation and discrimination, prejudice and hatred.
