SYNOPSIS
Sky Apartments in Jeongreung is the oldest apartment complex in Seoul. In 1968, as the Bugak Skyway was constructed for the defense of the capital city, the illegal shantytowns in the Baebatgol area were forcibly demolished. The Sky Apartments complex was quickly constructed to accommodate poor local residents. In 2008, the complex was designated as unsafe in case of natural disaster, and once all the inhabitants had departed, a lone elderly woman continues to live there like a ghost, in defiance of the eviction order.
DIRECTING INTENTION
From the birth to the death of Sky Apartments, the complex has been a space layered with the history of the urban poor. Illegal shantytown residents displaced by the Korean War and the migration from rural to urban areas were isolated here, and after living in defiance for close to 50 years, they were once again forced to move to enable redevelopment. Now this history is on the verge of disappearing as the apartment complex is demolished.
