Nothing short of the threat to its very existence could change the routine of the inhabitants of the small village of the Jave. But that is what they find themselves facing with the announcement that Jave may disappear beneath the waters of a huge hydroelectric power plant. In response to this devastating news, the community adopts an unusual and daring strategy: it will create a dossie recounting the great and heroic events of its history in order to justify its salvation from destruction. Since the majority of the villagers are illiterate, their first task is to find a scribe to record their stories. The chief candidate for the job, Antônio Biá, is an eccentric of dubious character, but the only one in the village who can write fluently. His work, however, will be rendered increasingly complex by the villagers’ failure to agree on which versions of the stories constitute their real history…

전작 에서도 멀리 떨어진 마을의 돈키호테식의 이야기를 선보였던 일레인 카페 감독은 <이야기꾼>에서도 외딴 시골 구석의 기발한 이야기를 담고 있다. 상상력과 창조, 그리고 이야기하기(Storytelling)에 대한 즐겁고도 유머러스한 한판 난장으로 가득한 영화. 그러면서도 동시에 무엇이 진실인지, 구전되는 역사를 제대로 담는다는 것이 얼마나 어려운지, 그리고 과연 누구의 이야기가 남게 되는지, 그리고 누구의 이야기가 남아야 하는지 등에 대한 자못 진지한 질문까지 펼쳐놓는 재주를 보여주고 있다.
