Painful history repeats in a father-son relationship. Mun-sung struggles with his finance problem and with his son Do-jin who refuses to live as he wants. Upon hearing that his father Gwang-deok is dying, Mun-sung goes to his hometown Gunsan for the first time in 30 years. 20 years ago, Gwang-deok was kidnapped to North Korea and falsely charged for espionage, and it left incurable wounds not only to him but to the family. Mun-sung wanders around the small city seeing the traces of his own father, but he fails to reconcile with his father until he passes away. Gwang-deok’s death brings Mun-sung and his son Do-jin together and gives another chance to reconcile, but Do-jin is unable to reconcile with his father.

여기 국가폭력의 피해자인 주인공의 아버지가 있다. 피해자는 권력에 대해 취약한 위치에 있었고, 진실과 정의를 향한 피해자의 요구는 짓밟혀 왔다.
주인공은 생존을 위해 최선의 선택을 해야 했고, 그 선택은 이후의 삶을 구속하고 옥죄는, 더러는 살아남기 위해 기억에서 지워버려야 하는 원죄가 된다.
그리고 이제 청년이 된 주인공의 아들의 삶에도 여전히 앞선 세대의 아픔이 찌꺼기처럼 남아있다.
삼대의 이야기를 통해 공적 역사에 가려진 이름 없는 사람들의 생존 이야기를 하려 한다. 과거의 부조리한 삶이 여전히 동시대적인 삶이라는 것은 부인하기 힘들다. 게다가 우리는 국가폭력과 다름없는 구조적 문제를 지닌 재난 참사를 겪었다.
이제 그 아픔의 현장들을 지나 ‘생존’하기 위해 숙명적으로 불편할 수밖에 없었던 아버지와 아들의 화해를 기대해 본다. 자꾸 덮어두려 했던 과거사와 미뤄두었던 관계의 문제를 삼대가 가진 상처를 통해 이야기하고자 한다.
한국 땅 아래 가려져 파도치듯 일렁이는 아픔에 대한 이야기를 하려 한다.
