SYNOPSIS
October 12, 1904, there was a hiring ad on The Korea Daily News for architect technicians. It was from a Japanese civil company that was in charge of the construction of a new building in Seoul. They were about to build a two-story stone building for the Belgian Consulate. However, the first person to visit was neither Korean nor Japanese. It was, in fact, Smurf. How did the Smurfs come all the way to Korea and were mobilized for consulate construction?
DIRECTING INTENTION
The Namseoul Museum of Art was built as the Belgian Consulate in the past, and its owner changed several times, and it is now a museum. This video is a fake documentary that shows the characters in the Belgian cartoons as the storytellers, while watching the space of Sadang, where the museum is in, as a curious remnant located in the crevice of redevelopment history. The Smurfs remind us of people who have been displaced from Korean modern history, while changing their bodies to various roles, such as demolition villagers, workers, and sometimes the subject of violence.
