하루하루 힘겹게 농사를 지어도 나아지지 않는 살림 형편으로 힘겨운 농부 부부는 중학교 다니는 아들의 등록금 마련하기도 어렵다. 게다가 막내 딸 병숙이는 아파서 학교도 가지 못하는데, 병원에 가볼 엄두도 못 내고 있다. 병원비를 마련해보려고 아버지는 대출을 알아보지만 그것도 여의치 않다. 겨우 마련한 병원비로 병원을 찾는데, 병숙은 오랫동안 방치한 복막염으로 수술을 해야 한다. 돈이 없어 수술 다음날 억지로 퇴원시키고 부부는 한시름 놓는다. 일년 농사를 지어 팔아 보지만, 경우 빚 갚는 정도고 농가 부채는 늘어만 간다. 병숙의 병이 재발해 큰 수술을 해야만 되고, 결국 소를 팔아 수술비를 마련한다. <파랑새>는 농부가 농사에 희망을 찾을 수 없는 암담한 현실을 그린다.

Even though a peasant couple works hard at their farm every day, they suffer in their estate. This couple has a hard time to make money only for their son’s middle school tuition. Their youngest daughter Byeong-sook is too sick to go to school, but seeing a doctor is hardly thinkable. Father tries to loan some money from bank for medical bills, but it does not go well, either. Finally, he finds some money, and they go to hospital. Byeong-sook, however, has to get a surgery because she has suffered from her peritonitis for long. Because they do not have enough money, Byeong-sook has to leave the hospital the next day of the surgery. That is a relief for the farmer couple. After they work at the farm for the year, they sell their crops. But, the money they make is only for paying back their debts. Their debt increases every year. Byeong-sook has a relapse of her disease, so she has to get a bigger surgery. At the end, they have to sell their ox to pay for the medical bills. Parangsae describes the dark reality in which a farmer cannot find hope from farming.
