Last night, an earthquake occurred in Hualien. Tourists from China are reported to be buried. It’s been exactly 2 years since the earthquake in Tainan. The night of the earthquake that shook the earth upside down, cannot be easily forgotten. Mom, do you remember the earthquake in Nantou? I was still in your womb then. Taiwan is in a state of tension at the news of the earthquake. I hope the buried people will be rescued soundly. Last fall, I have met a man from South Korea. He had come to Tainan to attend the film festival. After his return to Busan, I received a letter. He asked me if I could visit Kinmen Island with him. I might be visiting Kinmen Island in September.

Following the end of war aroused by Japan, the East Asian region falls into a phase of civil war. With no declarations of end of war, the two civil wars in China and Korea, each result in the establishment of two separate regimes: China and Taiwan, North Korea and South Korea. Only direct military actions have ceased, and the divided bordering nations continue to exist in this certain state of eccentricity. We call this state of eccentricity, peace. The anxiety from the aftermaths of war, becomes a symptomatic form of this eccentric peace, and flows along the Taiwan Strait and the Korea Strait, alongside with other different faces and forms in our collective consciousness.
The documentary, <Letters to Buriram> illustrates, the origin of these ‘faces and scenes’ that float in our eccentric present, by means of a letter sent from a daughter to her mother across East Asia.
