SYNOPSIS
Although everyone says that they oppose war, war is ever-present, and we are almost constantly on a battlefield.
Residents of Palestine consider their home to be a battlefield, and discuss their feelings and experiences of it. At the same time, soldiers dispatched to Iraq talk about their experiences over there. Although these stories may seem unrelated, there are points where their detailed experiences intersect."
DIRECTING INTENTION
The place where I am is a battlefield. And the place where I am headed is also a battlefield.
From battlefield to battlefield.
I find myself in a place where military violence is permitted, as an entity of resistance. Resisting overpowering military force is too difficult, because it entails facing the fear of death that says ‘I am next.’ However, I’m not dead yet, and thinking about our potential to resist military violence in our everyday lives, this is indeed the role of people who are still alive. If I am to be involved deeply in this immense war, which nothing can be done about, then this is indeed a possibility for resistance.
“‘An extreme situation called ‘war’,
On the battlefield human beings can no longer be human beings …
Everyday life and the battlefield are severed due to this aspect of the battlefield.
That is the start of oblivion, and silence.”
- Tomiyama Ichiro -
We talked to people about their memories of the battlefield. There are some who talk about them from lands far away from Korea, and some who remember battlefields on Korean soil. And the soldiers dispatched overseas… I wouldn’t run away from a battlefield, not after I discovered my own voice in their silences and, at times, shaking and despair, as they talk about their battlefield memories.
