Village people stroll the alleyways, addressing their neighbors with familiar nicknames. The village is tranquil but full of vitality. Sungmisan (Mt. Sungmi) Village is a community located in the heart of Seoul, a city where the word “community” seems no longer applicable. The residents run the community through so-called “self-help” and eco-friendly way of living. But in 2010, they meet with a crisis. A private school foundation has decided to raze part of the mountain which is at the center of village life and the city government has given them the go-ahead. The legend of Korean development seemed like it was about to claim its latest victim. The residents are quick to respond to the threat to Sungmisan. While the fight to protect the village is grueling at times, the villagers attempt to overcome this challenge in their own, special way. A chronicle of exhilarating fights to overturn our worn values.

Over the past 10 years, I lived as a resident of Sungmisan Village which provides the backdrop to this work, and got to know the community intimately. [Forest Dancing] began with the question, “What is it about the village that makes people dance?” In 2007, I planned a 3-part documentary about the village and faithfully recorded everything I saw. Over that period, countless media outlets showcased the village and countless visitors came to see it for themselves. But the dynamic vitality of the village cannot easily be discerned by uninitiated visitors. It is only people who have been part of a village or have extended experience observing village life who truly understand the essence of the village, and to such eyes, the joys and sorrows of the residents of Sungmisan Village will seem like a grand human drama. It is my wish that [Forest Dancing] be able to give the audience a glimmer of hope that it is in fact possible for a new kind of communal living to take root in the desolate concrete environment of the city.

2012 제17회 부산국제영화제

다큐멘터리 프로듀서와 영화제 프로그래머를 오가며 전방위 다큐멘터리 활동가로 명성을 떨쳐 온 강석필 감독. 그의 데뷔작 <춤추는 숲>은 자신이 살고 있는 마을 공동체에 대한 기록이다. 강석필, 홍형숙 감독 부부가 살고 있는 성미산 마을은 이미 여러 차례 언론에서 다뤄진 도심 속의 공동체 마을이다. 5년 전 마을에 대한 다큐멘터리를 만들기 위해 카메라를 들기 시작한 감독은 도시 속 마을 공동체의 소박한 일상의 모습을 기록하고 알리고자 했을 것이다. 하지만 이러한 작은 기록물은 거대한 대항자가 등장하면서 불행히도 거친 투쟁의 드라마로 그 틀을 바꿔야만 했다. 자연과 함께 어우러진 생태학적인 공동체를 꿈꾸던 마을은 산 주변부에 학교를 지으려는 사학재단의 개발 논리와 정면으로 부딪히게 된다. 현 정권 내내 너무나도 친숙하게 봐 온 포클레인과 건설 중장비들의 횡포는 성미산 마을에서도 예외가 아니었다. 거대한 중장비들은 어김없이 평화를 침범해 왔고 이를 막기 위해 성미산 사람들은 힘을 모으기 시작했다. 그리하여 이 영화는 시작과는 달리, 점점 투쟁의 과정이 영화의 대부분을 차지하게 된다. 하지만 이 영화는 거칠지 않다. 소박하고 따듯한 마음의 끈을 놓지 않는다. 마을 사람들의 연대와 투쟁의 과정은 성미산을 아이들의 꿈과 감성을 키우는 생태 공원으로 만들고자 하는 이들의 소망만큼이나 소박하고 사랑스럽다. 이들은 합창단을 만들어 공연도 하고, 주민 대표를 뽑는 지방 선거에 출마해 보기도 한다. 아름다운 세상을 만들기 위한 성미산 공동체의 확고한 신념은 눈앞의 싸움에서의 승리에 대한 갈망보다 더 길고 튼튼하게 자리 잡고 있다. 결국 사학재단의 학교 건립을 완전히 막을 수는 없었다. 하지만 성미산 공동체들은 남은 산의 일부분을 생태 공원으로 만들고자 여전히 노력 중이다. 영화는 마을 공동체의 중요성을 일깨워 준다. 우리가 낡은 가치를 극복하고 새로운 세상을 만들기 위한 가장 첫 번째 시작은 어쩌면 우리 주변에서 함께 연대하고 유쾌하게 투쟁할 수 있는 우리의 아름다운 이웃으로부터가 아닐까?
